چکیده

Low-shot visual learning, the ability to recognize novel object categories from very few, or even one example, is a hallmark of human visual intelligence. Though successful on many tasks, deep learning approaches tends to be notoriously datahungry. Recently, feature penalty regularization has been proved effective on capturing new concepts. In this work, we provide both empirical evidence and theoretical analysis on how and why these methods work. We also propose a better design of cost function with improved performance. Close scrutiny reveals the centering effect of feature representation, as well as the intrinsic connection with batch normalization. Extensive experiments on synthetic datasets, the one-shot learning benchmark “Omniglot”, and large-scale ImageNet validate our analysis.

Low-shot visual object recognition

Low-shot visual learning—the ability to recognize novel object categories from very few examples—is a hallmark of human visual intelligence. Existing machine learning approaches fail to generalize in the same way. To make progress on this foundational problem, we present a lowshot learning benchmark on complex images that mimics challenges faced by recognition systems in the wild. We then propo...

Boosted Zero-Shot Learning with Semantic Correlation Regularization

We study zero-shot learning (ZSL) as a transfer learning problem, and focus on the two key aspects of ZSL, model effectiveness and model adaptation. For effective modeling, we adopt the boosting strategy to learn a zero-shot classifier from weak models to a strong model. For adaptable knowledge transfer, we devise a Semantic Correlation Regularization (SCR) approach to regularize the boosted mo...

Generative Adversarial Residual Pairwise Networks for One Shot Learning

Deep neural networks achieve unprecedented performance levels over many tasks and scale well with large quantities of data, but performance in the low-data regime and tasks like one shot learning still lags behind. While recent work suggests many hypotheses from better optimization to more complicated network structures, in this work we hypothesize that having a learnable and more expressive si...

Low-Shot Learning for the Semantic Segmentation of Remote Sensing Imagery

Recent advances in computer vision using deep learning with RGB imagery (e.g., object recognition and detection) have been made possible thanks to the development of large annotated RGB image datasets. In contrast, multispectral image (MSI) and hyperspectral image (HSI) datasets contain far fewer labeled images, in part due to the wide variety of sensors used. These annotations are especially l...

Person re-identification with block sparse recovery

We consider the problem of automatically re-identifying a person of interest seen in a “probe” camera view among several candidate people in a “gallery” camera view. This problem, called person re-identification, is of fundamental importance in several video analytics applications. While extracting knowledge from high-dimensional visual representations based on the notions of sparsity and regul...
